Farmers Cay

George and I generally shy away from large crowds when cruising. One event that draws a crowd in the Bahamas is the 5F—First Friday in February Farmers Festival. We have never participated in the 5F but thought we should give it a try this year.

Yesterday morning we left Lee Stocking Island and sailed N 24 miles to Farmers Cay. As we were finishing up anchoring we had a lovely surprise. A couple we met six years ago—Bill and Donna on Mystic Star—dinghied over and invited us to join them and another couple for a late lunch at Ty’s Sunset Bar & Grill. We had a great time at Ty’s and during a walk around the island. When we returned to our dinghies they invited us to join them for drinks on Mystic Star.

This morning I discovered that the fresh water pump had stopped working. Fortunately, we had a spare on board. George spent a few hours replacing the pump and we are now back in business. This afternoon we went ashore again for a mid-afternoon dinner at Ocean Cabin. On the way to the restaurant we disposed of our garbage at the dump. At Ocean Cabin George had blackened fish and I had grilled fish. Our fish and the sides were delicious. I know, I know—we have eaten out two days in a row! What is going on!?! We used to set a goal to eat out once a week but sometimes we go weeks without eating out. I think it all averages out. As we were finishing our dinner at Ocean Cabin another cruising couple walked in. I asked if they had been to the 5F before and could tell us about it. They sat down, filled us in and we ended up having a nice, long chat.

Boats have been coming in all day long and there promises to be quite a crowd for the 5F. There are currently just 40 people living on the island. Tomorrow family members who live elsewhere will be coming in for the festival. The big event will be a regatta with Bahamian boats, taking place on Friday and Saturday.

Little Farmers Cay. The pink boat represents where we are anchored. We were very careful not to anchorage in the red area to the right of our boat. It is the approach to the airstrip. The Bahamian Defense Force could confiscate a boat if it is in the way and doesn’t move when asked.

Ty’s Sunset Bar and Grill. The airstrip is right behind Ty’s.

Ocean Cabin. Check out the hours at the bottom of the sign. We called ahead to see if they were going to be open & to order.

  1. You should eat out as much as you darn well please! After all you’re eating healthy fish. Have a great time at the 5F!
