Drift Diving

This afternoon we went drift diving in the Farmers Cay harbor. Drift diving is snorkeling in an area with current while hanging onto the dinghy. We tried to time our snorkeling just prior to slack low tide but the incoming tide was already fairly strong by the time we started. We were zipping by the coral and fish faster than we could get good photos and couldn’t swim to any other locations. We got in and out of the dinghy to reposition a few times before giving up.

Prior to the snorkeling, our friends Fred and Ruth Ann from Shooting Star joined us on Breeze On and we watched the cruiser’s boat race from a distance. Then we set out in our dinghies for the snorkeling. Fred and Ruth Ann are avid snorkelers and have more experience with drift diving than we have.

I was the underwater photographer today. I included this photo because it had one of my favorite fish—Queen Angelfish—in the upper right. It isn’t a great angle but I was moving too fast to get another photo.

Blue tangs and sargent major fish.

I haven’t been able to identify this. It was a pretty purple color—the photo didn’t do it justice.

Just a few of the boats gathered for the 5F.

Some of the dinghies onshore at Ty’s.

This morning I took this video of a plane taking off from the airstrip.

    1. Thank you! It was my first attempt at operating the camera. I had to snap the photos with one hand and hang into the dinghy with the other.
