Conception Island

We had a lovely three days at Conception Island. Although we shared the anchorage with several other sailboats and a few mega yachts, there is plenty of room and everyone was respectful. We had hoped that one of the mega yachts would treat us to a fireworks show on New Year’s Eve, but all they did was honk their horn at 7 pm. Yesterday two more mega yachts came into the anchorage. One had a helicopter on top which took off and flew around the island shortly after they arrived. We met some members of the family that owns both yachts while we were walking on the beach. The family is from Michigan. The yacht with the helicopter is the “support” boat for the other yacht and both yachts go all over the world. What a life.
While we were at Conception Island we snorkeled and went for walks on the gorgeous beach. We had forgotten just how nice the beach is for walking. The water at Conception Island is exceptionally clear and quite deep everywhere but next to the shoreline. Our snorkeling photos are not the best because of the deep water and distance from the reefs.
This morning, as we were raising the anchor, a dolphin came swimming by the boat. It was as if it was, as George would say, “bidding us a fond farewell.”

Smooth Trunkfish

George took this while I was climbing back in the boat after snorkeling. The reef was close enough that we could swim from the boat. The photo shows how incredibly clear the water is. You can clearly see the anchor chain over 40 feet away.

The anchor is deeply buried in the sand.
